Shadowing in various dental offices has solidified my passion for oral healthcare and my drive for a career in the field. My longest and most cherished shadowing experience has been with a periodontist in my hometown. Each day, I observe various surgeries, including implant procedures and gum grafts, and shadow the receptionist to gain insight into the managerial aspects of a dental practice. More than his clinical excellence, I most admire and learn from my mentor for taking the time to walk patients and their families through procedures, fostering both trust and understanding. I am motivated to be the same patient-centered provider as my mentor and his dedicated staff.
I have also enjoyed my experiences shadowing various general dentists throughout Northern Virginia. During my time in my childhood dentist’s office, I learned much about the preventative side of dentistry. I now have a much deeper understanding of screening for oral cancer and overall disease prevention from my time with this clinician. Additionally, I had the opportunity to observe the practice of two Black female dentists. I was excited to gain insight into running a joint practice and to see two individuals who represent me in dentistry.
